Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! Being comparatively closer to Mexico, Colorado has lot of Mexican influence on its food culture and celebrations. It definitely has influence at home as everybody loves Mexican food. So for the occasion I had to make something out of avocados, as Mexican food to me is incomplete without them. I was planning to make Guacamole, but then I thought about trying something new like maybe a Chocamole! That is when I came up with this smooth, velvety and oh-so chocolaty vegan dark choocolate avocado mousse recipe.
This was such a genius idea as now I have a dessert which gets the good fat from the avocados, richness from the dark cocoa powder and sweetness from fiber-rich dates. Now I don’t have to feel guilty about eating a mousse, as it is diabetic-friendly and paleo-friendly recipe. All because I had a box of dates from Costco lying in my refrigerator! This recipe is also good for people who are not avocado lovers ( avocado beginners as I like to call them ๐ ), as you will not recognize this power house behind the dark chocolate flavor!.
Steps for making the Vegan Dark Chocolate Avocado Mousse
- Prepare the ingredients
- Blend the ingredients
- Serve it!
Well there is not much to do here except to scoop out your avocados! Isn’t it easy and convenient. But yes your avocados need to be perfectly ripe for this recipe. You don’t want it to be under-ripe or overripe, as it changes the taste of the mousse.
If you don’t have a high power blender or food processor, you might want to soak the dates in warm water for around an hour to soften them. I soaked mine for around 15 minutes and they were soft enough to be blended easily.
This step is as easy as throwing all the ingredients in a blender or food processor bowl and pushing a button Depending on your machine it can take around 5 minutes to get a smooth velvety mixture.
As a first step I put the scooped avocado, dates and cocoa powder in the bowl and blend them together coarsely. Then I let my food processor blend it further by adding little portions of water through the feeding tube. Do not add too much water as it might make the mousse runny and loose the consistency. Blend it well to get a smooth consistent mixture.
I mostly like making mildly sweet desserts, but if you prefer a sweeter version then simply add more dates or 1-2 tablespoon of sugar or honey, according to your taste. You can also try using coconut milk instead of water. I am sure it will be healthier and richer recipe with coconut milk, but I just did not have it around while I tried the recipe. Also, for my cocoa powder I like to use gourmet Dutch processed cocoa powder which lends the darkness to the chocolate flavor and color. You can use any cocoa powder for this recipe though.
Transfer the mousse into small serving bowls. Now you can have it right away, but for the best taste I like to chill it in the refrigerator for atleast an hour. You can serve it with chocolate shavings or whipped cream if you like, but then it is no longer vegan. Although you might use some dairy-free chocolate for topping. There is no such thing as too much chocolate ๐
So how did you like this idea of chocolate avocado mousse? Do you have any other interesting avocado recipe I can try?
This vegan dark chocolate mousse is a 3-step and 3-ingredient recipe which gives a smooth guilt-free chocolate dessert. Sweetened by dates, it is a diabetic-friendly and paleo-friendly recipe.
Ingredients
- 1 ripe medium avocado
- 2/3 cup pitted dates (around 12-15 pieces)
- 2 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup water
- 1-2 tablespoons sugar/honey (optional)
Instructions
- Soak the dates in warm water and set them aside for around an hour to soften them. Scoop out the avocado.
- Add the avocado, dates and cocoa powder into a blender or food/processor bowl. Blend all the ingredients together to a smooth mixture, by adding small amount of water at a time. Add only little amount of water at a time to ensure the right consistency. Add sugar/honey to the blender if you need a sweeter taste.
- Chill it before serving.
Notes
1. This dessert is mildly sweet. If you need a sweeter dessert, then add some extra sugar or honey to the recipe, according to taste.
2. Try using coconut milk instead of water for a creamier and healthier option.
